Oh, Adam, I'm sorry about the migraine. They suck. But your poem does such a great job of describing that sense of a private light show you could never really describe to someone else. I had my first migraine in several years just a few weeks ago. It wasn't a "bad one." (I mean, they're all bad, but it didn't give me that lingering feeling of having shed IQ points for days, and it resolved pretty quickly.) I think, for me, being mostly done with migraines is one of the few silver linings of menopause. So I can't wish you that particular benefit, but I'm glad a diet shift has helped. And the aura! So weird, and yes, as you say, kind of beautiful/interesting if you weren't already in pain. I get these sparkly slashes in my vision, like psychedelic jet trails. When I feel something weird happening I always close my eyes to check if I can see anything strange against the blackness of my eyelids. That's how I always know for sure. Hope you're feeling okay now.
So interesting to read this too, Tara. For me i get this growing shimering blob in the center of my vision yhat gradually expands and spreads to the edges. I can 100% relate to that search you do when you close your eyes.. sometimes im feeling it and im unsure if its there or not... The moment i see it the pills go in because once the lights stop the pain begins.
What a brilliant line... It is so hard to describe this feeling. So hard to explain the whole experience which goes well beyond simple pain.. the anxiety the whole body sickness.. its awful but also unique to each sufferer.
Really interesting to hear that the diet helped. I avoid inflammatory food a bit but not very well - i find mostly that work and stress tips me over the edge but it helps to cut out the red meat etc so i have a bit more buffer
'hot nail hammer to the skull,' is such a powerful image. I love how this poem is not just Migraine but Migraine Aura, bringing a fresh perspective. I used to see twinkly halos over people's head, it'd freak my co-workers out when I'd tell them. Hope you're feeling better.
Thanks, Treasa! Yeah, the 'twinkly halo' thing is hard to describe to someone who hasn't directly experienced it. It sounds a little made up. 🤣 And, yes, feeling much better, thank you. 😊
I feel weird calling a poem about migraines gorgeous, but it is. I’m sorry you experience them, though.

I do the same "close my eyes to check" thing. :) It's like, "Am I seeing things, or seeing things?" 🤣
Thanks for the comment, Tara! :)

"the fall forever vertigo."

Thanks, David! Yes, a very strange experience to try and describe.
Yeah, the migraine reduction was unexpected. For me it seems to be cutting out dairy that specifically did the trick. 🤷
In csse you are interested, this was my effort to describe my migraines https://open.substack.com/pub/notesandnoises/p/can-you-describe-it?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android&r=dwf9g
Mainly concerned with trying to express it is not just a headache...
Thank you for sharing that, David! :)

Good to hear, hope the hot hammering nail stays away for a while.
