My favorite human turned forty-five this week (Happy Birthday,

Petra Hernández

!), which got me thinking about all the ways, big and small, we hold one another through time.

It reminded me of this poem, about the hopes, prayers, and wishes we embed into the everyday actions we take in support of those we love — the lunches we pack, the little life-improving purchases we make, the tripping hazards we tuck away before they are even noticed. Each action a tiny ritual, an incantation, a magic spell woven between hearts:

Did you know
that when I fold your laundry
every crease is a prayer
for your protection?

Every sock 
which finds its twin
a canticle 
to your future success?

Every t-shirt turned 
right side out
a benediction
for your never-ending joy?
