My favorite human turned forty-five this week (Happy Birthday,
!), which got me thinking about all the ways, big and small, we hold one another through time.It reminded me of this poem, about the hopes, prayers, and wishes we embed into the everyday actions we take in support of those we love — the lunches we pack, the little life-improving purchases we make, the tripping hazards we tuck away before they are even noticed. Each action a tiny ritual, an incantation, a magic spell woven between hearts:
While Folding Laundry
Did you know that when I fold your laundry every crease is a prayer for your protection? Every sock which finds its twin a canticle to your future success? Every t-shirt turned right side out a benediction for your never-ending joy?
I hope you are celebrating love this week, and that this poem finds you well.

Laundry is such a great topic for a poem, and you really get to the heart of it here. Everyday chores really are acts of love. I’ve folded a lot of laundry for my family and you are so right about each crease holding a prayer. And when I think about how my kids clothes have changed in size over their lives it’s such a meditation on the passage of time and growth. Another great one.
i love laundry poems so much!
